Vinay Kumar is a leadership coach, author and speaker. In addition to providing leadership, career and business coaching, he designs and delivers leadership and staff development workshops that lead to professional and personal growth, and better teamwork and business results.
Prior to becoming a leadership coach, Vinay spent 10 years in Federal service and 16-years co-owning and operating a family-owned printing and mailing business. In the business he was responsible for sales, marketing, customer service and operations. Starting with door-to-door selling and later learning about niching and target marketing, under his leadership revenue grew 28 folds, average invoice 14 folds, and profitability doubled. Client retention, client acquisition and number of referrals also grew steadily. He also received numerous awards from well known organizations for providing outstanding customer service. He learned the business from ground up, earning himself a Ph.D. from The School of Hard Knocks.
He strongly believe in the value of feedback and that when a leader does courageous inner work and grows from the inside out so do the people the leader leads. In his experience as leaders grow they become more effective and they conduct themselves in more constructive ways that translates into staff who are more engaged, more productive and who stay longer.
He further believes that in order to create breakthrough results leaders must engage in new learning and generate new thinking. It is new thinking that helps leaders see new possibilities, communicate and collaborate more effectively, build extraordinary relationships – and ultimately create breakthrough results.
He is the co-author of Language and the Pursuit of Leadership Excellence: How Extraordinary Leaders Build Relationships, Shape Culture, and Drive Breakthrough Results. This book and programs based on this body-of-work are a key part of many leadership coaching and leadership and professional development curriculums at leading educational institutions, corporations, government and non-profit organizations. Vinay immigrated to the US from India in 1969 at age of 11. Prior to finishing his engineering education in 1981, while attending school and learning English during the day, he worked blue-collar jobs after school. This instilled in him an understanding and strong appreciation for people of all backgrounds, dignity of labor, value of hard work, and compassion for those who strive to better their lives and those of their loved ones.
In the course of his professional life, he has held both leadership and non-leadership positions – in the government, private sector, and family business. He has experienced both successes and failures and considers his failures to be a particular gift. They have positioned him well to be sensitive to the extraordinary demands and challenges that you and your teams face.
What has helped him face and overcome challenges is his: passion for learning and for people; ability to remain laser focused on outcomes while remaining flexible in approach; ability to persevere keeping the long view in mind and to delay gratification; being comfortable in asking for support; and having the inner strength to get back up and get back in the game.
In addition, he knows how lonely it can be at the top. Before becoming aware of coaching, there were many times he longed for someone objective and neutral with whom he could openly talk and discuss his challenges, someone who would really listen and challenge his thinking to help him see things from a different perspective, and be a sounding board and a thinking partner. Today he enjoys being such a person for leaders.
His wife and he have two grown daughters. They reside in Great Falls, Virginia, USA and they enjoy trekking in the Himalayas, yoga, running, going for long walks, and reading spiritual works. In addition, Vinay continues to do his own inner work. He can be contacted at email@example.com.
